  1. I prefer using #1 SYP floor joists but when spans are an issue I use Triforce open web joists. I do like the open web joists but my dislike is having to add drywall to the trimmable ends to meet fire rating for building codes when the basement ceiling is unfinished. If this was avoidable I probably would only use Triforce open web joists instead of #1 SYP. Is there an easier less labor wasting way to avoid this?

    1. Hello Doug,

      Your are right, TRIFORCE® open joist has been evaluated for equivalent fire-resistant construction to dimensional lumber or structural composite lumber equal to or greater than 2-inch by 10-inch nominal dimension, in accordance with Exception 4 of Section R302.13 of the 2015/2018 International Residential Code® (equivalent to section R501.3 of the 2012 IRC). If not using TRIFORCE® or equivalent components listed above, the only other option is to finish the basement with gypsum which is, in my point of you, more expensive and laborious than cladding the trimmable end of TRIFORCE® and keep enjoying an open web joist.

      For this specific assembly, the TRIFORCE® truss requires a ⅝-inch-thick (15.9 mm) wood structural panel or ½-inch-thick (12.7 mm) gypsum board attached to each side of the ⅜-inch-thick (9.5 mm) wood structural panel of the trimmable end of the truss.
